What is a power cord called?

A power cord is an electrical component that connects your appliance to the wall outlet. It's made of an insulated electrical cable with one or both ends molded with connectors. One end is a male connector that goes into the electrical receptacle, wall outlet, or extension cord. The other end has a female connector attached to your appliance or another male connector.

Power cords are used in every kind of electrical appliance—TVs, computers, refrigerators, air conditioners, and more! They're also used in both domestic and commercial settings: you'll find them in homes and businesses alike. And they come in all kinds of sizes: from 16 A to 20 A and 125 V to 250 V respectively.

What is a power cord used for?

A power cord is a cable that connects your computer or another device to the wall outlet in order to use it.

Power cords are used with laptops, desktop computers, monitors, printers, and other electronics. The power cord has two ends: one that plugs into an electrical outlet and another one that connects to your device.

The number of pins on each end depends on the voltage requirements of your electronic device. The type and size of pin connectors used in your country will determine which power cord you need for your product. Some devices require different types of connectors for different voltages (called splitters), so you may need more than one power cord for some devices.

Amps and watts in power cords

So you've got a new appliance, and you're ready to use it. But before you plug in that power cord, make sure you know what kind of cord you need.

The name of each of our Certified Appliance Accessories dryer and range cords includes the amps. For example, if you take a look at our range cords, you'll not only see the reference to 3 wire or 4 wire, but also the amps.

For the appliance power supply and extension cords that plug into standard wall outlets, you'll see amps in the item name and watts down in the specification bullets. Those two numbers will help you figure out just how much the cord can handle.

For example, the 10-amp cords can handle up to 1,250 watts. The 13-amp ones handle up to 1,625 watts, and the 15-amp ones handle up to 1,875 watts. Those numbers are based on 125 volts as a precaution.

Those cords can also be purchased separately. And if for some reason, you need to extend the reach of an existing power cord, or simply want to make a hidden outlet more accessible.

What is inside a power cord?

There are a number of things that can be inside a power cord:

-A plug, which connects to the end of the cord that you plug into an outlet or other electrical device.

-Cordage, which is the actual wires in a cord.

-A strain relief connector to secure the cord to the device. This is usually a plastic piece that holds the cord in place.

How do you plug in a power cord?

A power cord plugs into an electrical socket and provides a low resistance path for electrical current to flow through. A good conductor is made of a material whose atomic structure has loosely bound electrons in its outer shell which can move across the atomic matrix of the material (see our FAQ on what is electricity for more information on atoms) This movement of electrons is known as the current flow. On the contrary, good insulators have tightly bound electrons which make it difficult for this current flow.

How do you plug in a power cord?

The kind of power cord you need depends on your appliance and its manufacturer. For example, if you have a kettle that runs off 110 volts of AC, the cord will normally be an extension of the socket in the wall.

In this case, any high-quality two or three-pin socket should work just fine, whether it is UK or US style. In general, any high-current professional tool requiring higher amperage than your kettle can use a different cord, like our 12/2 machine power cord which was specifically designed with machines in mind.
